Mobile Phone Directories: An Overview
Is there a mobile phones directory where the numbers can be looked up like in a normal phone directory?
Mobile phone marketing is increasing of late and it is something that scares many people with mobile phones. The Federal Communications Commission published a report warning of the problems.
The subscribers feel that the mobile phone numbers would be listed in a mobile phone directory. It would be handed over to the marketers. The privacy would not be tampered with and wireless subscribers would be asked to put themselves immediately on the do-not-call listings. The last thing you want is your number to be on a mobile phone directory given to marketers.
Now, mobile phone numbers would not be listed on the national directory and telemarketers would not be able to access the directory. It is illegal for the telemarketers to use any directory to call wireless phones.
The national directory would be listed but the numbers listed there would be on an optional basis. If a mobile phone subscriber does not agree then their number would not be listed. The cell phone directory is a part of the 4service. It would not be published in the form of a book. It would also not be there on the internet. And it would obviously not be there for sale for the telemarketers.
The mobile phone subscribers can give the numbers for the call list if they want but there would be no deadline for the collection of the list. This is much like the email messages sent as marketing mail.
The Wireless Association started with the 411 directory about eighteen months ago. There is a huge demand for that. The providers of wireless service have some confusion about the directory. For the owners of small business who are always on the road listing there numbers make it much easier for there customers to find. There are many small business owners who cannot afford a receptionist to answer the phone.
As in case of email IDs, where privacy is obviously maintained, mobile phone owners would also like to maintain privacy. In that case what is the use of creating a mobile phones directory for them? On the other hand, there are some people who would love their numbers to be listed in the directory.
The director of the Cingular Wireless (now AT&T), Chris Comes, expressed an
opinion that they would not contact subscribers about a mobile phones directory. They might do so in the future. U.S. Cellular Company will however, not ask the customers' participation in the mobile phones directory. They would not like to reveal their numbers against it.
